Holiday Inn LAX Workers Strike!
October 12, 2012 7:34 am
Last week, workers at the Holiday Inn on Century Boulevard near LAX blew the whistle on their employer, filing a class action lawsuit alleging a host of wage and hour violations. The hotel is covered under a 2008 Living Wage ordinance requiring Century Boulevard employers to pay their workers at least $11.97 an hour, yet employees claimed they were forced to work without clocking in, denied meal breaks, and that their time sheets were tampered with by management.
Within the week since the lawsuit was filed, two employees have been fired. This morning, workers walked off the job, striking for a fair workplace and freedom to speak up without fear of retaliation.
A separate Fox 11 investigation found that deplorable conditions are rampant at the hotel. The Holiday Inn’s cost-cutting practices apparently apply not only to violating living wage and overtime laws, but also to failing to purchase cleaning supplies that allow workers to do their jobs and guests to visit an acceptably sanitary hotel.
UNITE HERE, who have been working with the Holiday Inn LAX employees, are urging people to email the hotel’s primary investors, imploring them to come down on management for the retaliatory firings and disgusting conditions at the hotel. Click here to fill out the form email.
